So many people have requested information recently about the sort of music that we can offer for wedding ceremonies and receptions, that we have decided to have a page dedicated to this — the Wildfolk Wedding Services page is under construction!
Although Molly dancing is a winter tradition, the Rhubarb Tarts have been out and about dancing this summer...
When Rhubarb Tarts went down to Foxtrot with Foxs Morris at Bretforton (near Evesham), many of the dancers and musicians went to a session at the Fleece. It was there, fuelled by some excellent real ale, that the idea was conceived... we'd dance to Alison's (from Foxs) fantastic voice and Nigel (Landlord of the Fleece) would dance with us. And here it is — College Hornpipe with a difference — not to the usual tune and slightly slower than normal... with a howling gale as background noise! (Thanks to RingOBelle for the video.)
Since last year they have some new dancers and more band members... but new dancers and musicians always welcome. Please contact Wildfolk if you'd like to come along to a practice session.
Being busy musicians (and having to work for a living!) Tony and Mark have found it difficult to give their excellent duo the time it deserves. However, to get back into the swing of things, they have set a provisional timetable for their first CD, the second on the Wildfolk label. In all likelihood, it will be recorded at the Music Room studio.
In 2007, the duo recorded a demo at the said-studio, and were more than happy with the results. If you would like a free copy, please get in touch...
The Wildfolk Ceilidh Band has been in action over the Christmas period, despite key members being otherwise committed. No problem — Mark was delighted to recruit Ron Darnbrough (caller and bodran) and one of England’s finest fiddle players, Gina le Faux, to play at the wedding celebration of Chris and Kate Bates. Our congratulations to the bride and groom! Chris Bates, himself a ceilidh band musician, has kindly given his permission for us to quote his words (received by e-mail): “Just wanted to say thanks — the band were absolutely superb! Please pass my thanks on to them all. If we ever need a band again, we know where to look! We had a wonderful wedding day and they really contributed to the atmosphere.”

Congratulations to our good friends Janet Flynn and Steve Hopewell, from Pennine Camphill Community, who were married at Wakefield Registry Office on 27 December. The music at the celebration was provided by Mark Mawby, who played pieces by Sylvius Leopold Weiss and Augustin Barrios (La Catédral), as well as his own compositions and a Gaelic Air.
Mark’s first CD, Waters Rising, was released last year! Essentially solo guitar, Mark was joined on some tracks by Cameron Edgar and percussionist Russell Jalland and on others by Tony Taffinder.
We cannot but agree with the recent review of Waters Rising in the Daily Telegraph — Mark’s guitar playing certainly is “... confident and engrossing” and the finger-picking “fantastic”!
Waters Rising was recorded, mixed and mastered by Alistair Russell at Glade Recordings.
Copies of this fabulous CD are available at gigs or from Wildfolk, PO Box 528, Wakefield WF1 9DH. Cheques (£11 including P&P), should be made payable to ‘Wildfolk’.

On 9 September Mark and Tony played at the Drill Hall café bar in Lincoln as part of the lunchtime entertainment during the highly successful Lincoln BIG Morris Festival.
They went down a storm. To quote one member of the audience “... [Taffinder and Mawby] blew me away”.
Artistes available for folk festivals, workshops, concerts, folk clubs and private functions. Our talented classical guitarist Mark Mawby is also available to play at weddings and other events.
